Do I have to test my soil?

If you farm arable land in England, yes: every cultivated field, for basic nutrients, at least every five years.

If you farm arable land in England, yes. Since 2018 it has been a legal requirement to test all cultivated arable soils for basic nutrients at least every five years. A basic soil test covers it, and the same results feed your variable‑rate plan.

If your last test was in 2021, it is due this season.

What the basic test covers

pH, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. Every field mapped on the ADAS index, with a lime requirement in tonnes per field at the target pH you choose.

How we do it

Twelve cores make one sample, one sample per hectare. Every sample goes to a UKAS‑accredited laboratory. Our ATVs have full heated cabs, so we can sample as long as the land can be travelled on.
